The Hidden Lava Canyon
The Golan Heights is well known for being the perfect combination of beauty, scenery and adventure. Yet what many people don’t know is that deep inside a hidden gorge lies what is called the ‘hidden lava canyon’. As we start our journey, we start to climb the trail that leads us to the head of the canyon. To one side lies the actual canyon, and on the other is spectacular views of the Hula Valley and Galilee Mountains. Once upon the top, we begin our canyoneering! As we make our way downward into the canyon, we will come across four waterfalls. The highest of them reaches 120 feet! This is where we begin rappelling down some incredibly exciting volcanic waterfalls which end in pools of water depending on the season. In the winter, the falls are active and gushing with water – wet suites are needed for this time of year. In the summer and the autumn, as the rains subside, the canyon dried out completely and is then taken over with bursting, wild blooms of wildflowers and bamboo. In the springtime, it could go either way. It may or may not have water depending on what the rainfall was in the winter. The wildlife that can be experienced here is also very special. Due to the fact that its remote and unpopulated, there is a great chance you will be able to see jackals, wild boars, hawks, and eagles soaring above. If you are concerned on whether the Hidden Lava Canyon is good for you and your family, there is no need to worry. This site is perfect for older children as there is rappelling involved. People ask us all the time, ‘what age is this good for?’ Once more, we stand by our opinion that it is not so much the age of a child, but rather how adventurous they are! Israel is overflowing with special sites that many families flock to. Why not go off the beaten track and head out into the wilderness? Dare to experience Israel in a way most people don’t realize is actually highly possible!
